Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council has launched a procurement on 05/12/2025 to select a Development Partner to develop the Stockport Town Centre District Heat Network.
The network under the procurement consists of a Reference Scheme with a total heat demand of 59 GWh pa within a total Zonal opportunity of 150 GWh pa. The proposed low carbon heat sources under consideration include extracting heat from the sewer with heat pumps, along with thermal storage and back-up gas boilers. More than 80% of the network offtake will be from existing public buildings, and further off-take will be from the proposed multi-billion-pound development within the mayoral development corporation situated in the town centre.
As one of the leading seven local authorities participating in the Government’s Advanced Zoning Programme the scheme has been developed by the Local Authority with DESNZ and GMCA. The scheme benefits from Green Heat Network Fund grant for commercialisation, of which up to £600k will be on-granted to a successful developer and a further £13.65m capital grant for construction.
The development of district heating within Stockport will play a crucial role in meeting the climate and economic ambitions for the authority.
