East London Energy (ELE): Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park — Bring Energy

East London Energy (ELE) is one of the UK’s largest heat networks, serving the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and surrounding communities in Stratford.  Operated by Bring Energy in partnership with the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC), the network provides reliable, low-carbon heat and hot water to residential, commercial and public buildings across a major regeneration area.

Spanning over 20km, ELE is a cornerstone of East London’s long-term infrastructure, supporting thousands of homes and businesses while enabling the transition away from individual gas boilers.

Key Facts

  • First major expansion beyond the Helix masterplan
  •  college buildings connected
  • Partnership with Newcastle City Council
  • Supports low-carbon heat supply to education sector

Strategic Importance

The Newcastle Helix expansion illustrates how heat networks can evolve over time – moving from anchor developments into broader city-wide systems.

This type of phased growth is critical to achieving scale, improving network economics, and supporting long-term decarbonisation across UK cities. It also reinforces the role of local authority partnership in enabling network expansion.

Local Impact

  • Provides low-carbon heat to key education facilities
  • Supports local skills and sustainability leadership
  • Strengthens the city’s clean energy infrastructure

“East London Energy shows what can be achieved when heat networks are planned as core infrastructure from the outset. It provides a scalable, long-term solution that supports both regeneration and decarbonisation, while delivering reliable heat to local communities.”
